Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Jerry Garcia Band: Live at Shoreline ???

I've got a gift certificate to Barnes&Noble.com so I was browsing through their concert dvd's and while I was disappointed with their selection of Grateful Dead and Jerry band dvd's, I came across one that I'd never heard of before. It was "Jerry Garcia Band: Live at Shoreline" and it was from a date that the Dead were supposed to play at Shoreline, but Brent died a week or two before it, so the Dead cancelled and the Jerry Garcia Band played the date instead. Unfortunately there aren't any new copies in stock and the used copy that they have is $110 !!! I did a Google shopping search and the only other copy that came up was a used one for $70. I can't afford either of those prices for a dvd, but does anyone out there have this? Is it as good as I assume it is? And good or not, why is it out of print?

Hey JackDog. Seeing as I'm not too fond of this release, and will likely never watch my copy again, I'd be happy to send it to ya.

It's a bootlegged copy. However it's the same quality of the official DVD release, which it is was ripped from. E-mail me at rdenirojb87ATyahoo if interested.

dammit. I knew I should have tried it before the offer.
I am soooo sorry. I honestly did try to dub it for you
last night on my
http://hometheater.about.com/od/dvdproductreviews/fr/lgrc897tfull.htm

(page down and see~)
"However, just as you can't copy commercially made video tapes to another VCR due to Macrovision anti-copy encoding, the same applies to making copies to DVD. DVD recorders cannot bypass the anti-copy signal on commercial VHS tapes or DVDs. If a DVD recorder detects the anti-copy encoding on a commercial DVD it will not start the recording and display some sort of message either on screen or on its LED front panel display that it detects the anti-copy code or that it is detecting an unusable signal."

Damn copy-protection. No wonder all these artists
are rolling in the dough. kid

It has worked before on a few things for me, but I should
have checked myself before I wrecked myself.
I got your addy, so you can take it down before the trollers
and phishers get it.

My sincere apologies man. I hope you find it or I can help.
And even though the other forumites disagree
on some points, they are all correct:
~It is nice to have.

~It is one of the latter/only Jerry DVDs out there,
which is the clincher.

~Kahn is WAY down and the sound could be better.

~The vid shots are pro.

~If your wife will let you play it during dinner... nuf said. biggest point of all imo.

~The set list is ho-hum, but enjoyable. As good as the
Dear Prudence sounds, there are some completely messed up
parts/lyrics.

~ It is laid back. From what I have read, it was kinda
a somber air due to the loss of another GD key-twinkler
(btw, Mydland died on 7-26, during the small space between
the summer and fall tour. This would have been the start
or the fall tour. just fyi)

Why it's unavailable is wayyyy beyond me. The supply and
demand are uneven. Dead.net used to sell it for 18
bucks. If you have to have it, dont spend more than $50
at the MOST.
I will be in touch on the status of what I can do.
Sorry again. Good luck. Feel free to call me an ass
anytime, just make sure you go to the back of the line.

I paid less than 20 for it new at the local Fred Meyer ( grocery store and all in one store with electronics etc ). No way in HELL pay more than 20 like Rasta said. It's a good DVD but come on I'm sure you can find someone to hook you up with a copy OR any number of recording out there of a very similar set

1st off, the disc is outstanding. Jerry is content and in the groove throughout. Music is top notch.

As for why it is out of print, I can only guess that sales were pretty bad, but it might make for an excellent re-release candidate.

A friend of my got one used off Amazon for about $50 and says he is more than satisfied with the purchase.

"1st off, the disc is outstanding. Jerry is content and in the groove throughout. Music is top notch."

This is just one man's opinion of course, but I find this DVD to be extremely disappointing. Not impressed with the sound. Kahn is far too low in the mix, and it just doesn't sound too good compared to other GD DVD releases. Not crazy about the setlist either and most important, I've probably heard a hundred JGB shows I enjoy much more. There's some intangible quality that is lacking from this performance, and I wish I could more precisely pinpoint what it is. It sucks that there isn't really any great quality video material of solo Jerry.

I don't want to deter you from checking it out though because you may enjoy it. A lot of other people do, but I'm just not one of them. I think there's so much other better material from JGB, but unfortunately it isn't on video. There's clips of the performance on YouTube. I would check those out first.

I forget who posted this fairly recently here, but it's one of the best solo Jerry performances I've ever seen (not in terms of video quality, but the quality of the music):

I agree that the setlist is rather ho-hum, but I do like the performance. Yes it is very laid back, maybe too much so, but that is up to the individual to decide. Perhaps if they release something else (I would love to see the shows I saw at the then Great Woods) my opinion may change, but for now I do really enjoy this (and the fact that my wife will let me play it during dinner is not something to be easily overlooked)
